We spoke to our Trainee Quantity Surveyor, Freya Carney, about why she chose a career in construction, a typical day in her life and the experience she has gained on high-profile projects.
What inspired you to pursue a career in construction, and how did you begin your journey in the industry?
I have always been interested in the process of construction and the various elements/roles that go into building a project.
Throughout my final few years at secondary school, I knew that the construction was the industry I wanted to work in. From there, I researched a variety of roles which took my interest and after discussing my options, quantity surveying was the route I chose to go down.
I wanted to learn through a degree apprenticeship scheme and after applying for multiple job opportunities, Henry Boot Construction enabled me to start my quantity surveyor journey.
And what drew you to choose quantity surveying as your specialism?
The main thing that drew me to quantity surveying was speaking with a family friend who has been in the industry for many years.
We discussed the benefits of being a QS, the day-to-day life of a QS and the challenges that come with the role – it was these conversations that drew me to the role.
Can you tell us a bit about your apprenticeship experience at Henry Boot Construction? What skills and knowledge have you found most valuable so far?
Being part of the Henry Boot apprenticeship scheme has made a huge impact on my learning and development within the industry.
I have been given various opportunities to help me progress, including onsite experience, qualifications at Sheffield Hallam University, training courses, attending networking events and awards evenings.
Working onsite with such experienced supervisors and team members has allowed me to gain knowledge and skills. I have found this very valuable alongside university, as I have been able to apply the skills and knowledge, I have learnt at Henry Boot Construction to my university work and vice-versa.
What does a typical day look like for you as a Trainee Quantity Surveyor?
Each day differs from the last, which I love. As Trainee Quantity Surveyor I am given the opportunity to carry out new tasks all the time, with one highlight being working on the AMRC project.
Some tasks I have done since beginning my role at HBC include presenting on-site forecasts, carrying out site valuations, liaising with sub-contractors and completing cash-flow forecasts.
Can you tell us a bit about the Heart of the City and Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) projects and your experience working on them?
I’ve been given the opportunity to work on both projects during my apprenticeship. When I joined the Heart of the City Pound’s Park project, the job was already live which meant I missed the earlier stages of the works. However, through shadowing I was able to learn the handover stages of a project which I could then carry over to AMRC, a pioneering research facility in Sheffield.
The two projects are completely different, so I’ve learned the variety of processes within projects. I have especially enjoyed being part of the AMRC job as I have seen the project through from pre-construction to handover. I have also been able to take more responsibility and individuality when carrying out tasks due to my increased confidence and experience.
What skills or qualities do you think are essential for a successful career in quantity surveying?
- Organisational skills
- Communication skills
- Teamwork and independence
- Attention to detail
I would advise others to take the same route I did, completing a degree apprenticeship. It provides vast opportunities and experience, all while gaining university qualifications. There is a lot to learn within the industry, but there are many experienced, generous people there to guide and push you to a successful career.
